LABOR 6-a

●Contract of Employment

□ A worker signs a contract of employment with his employer.
□ The employer must clearly state and show in writing to his employee the working conditions such as job
description, workplace, working hours, wages and holidays. 
(In principle, working hours are 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week, while holidays are at least one day 
a week. These and other labor conditions are the minimum standards set by law.)
□ You must confirm if you are included in the health insurance of the company as stated in the contract. 
If you cannot have company insurance and your period of residence is at least one year, you can join the 
national health insurance once the reason for your non-inclusion in the company’s insurance is cleared up.

□ There are work regulations in each workplace and working hours, promotion, retirement and other matters 
are already determined.

●Work-Related Accidents (Workmen’s Compensation Insurance for Accidents)

□ This is the country’s compensation system for workers who encounter accidents or illnesses that are 
work-related or that happen while they are commuting to and from their place of work. 
□ The employer shoulders work-related accident or illness compensation including health insurance payments. 
The worker doesn’t have to pay anything.

●Employment Insurance

□ This is the country’s system that helps unemployed workers by providing living allowances, assistance in 
finding a job and others.
□ A worker can receive unemployment subsidy throughout the job-hunting period.
□ To receive the unemployment subsidy, apply at the Public Employment Security Office (Hello Work).

●Pension Insurance System

□ This is a pension system for the financial security of the elderly, the disabled, or those who have died, 
and their families.
□ The insurance payment is shared by the worker and his employer (deducted from the worker’s salary).
□ In case a worker cannot receive his pension because he has left Japan or for other reasons, he can receive 
it in a lump sum.
* Those who cannot have the pension insurance must join the national pension system.
